San Diego is the second largest city in California with a population of over 1.3 million. It is situated in the San Diego bay and it is surrounded by several urban communities. The bay is separated from the ocean by two peninsulas: the Colorado and Point Loma. In the northern and southern part of the city you can encounter many farms, usually in the valleys. The city was founded in 1769 and incorporated in 1850. The weather is mild and sunny no matter the season and the hottest times of the year are in the beginning of autumn. In the winter, the temperatures are lower, but it rarely snows. Though out the cold season, it usually rains but in the summer the city has almost non-existent precipitation. In the next years, it is estimated that San Diego will have a larger population and a larger median household income. Also, the crime rate is getting lower since the 1990's. All violent crimes are lower than most cities and San Diego has the sixth lowest crime rate in the United States. Many biotechnology companies have their primary offices here. The city is considered the top biotech cluster in the United States. Wireless cellular technology was developed in San Diego by Qualcomm Incorporated, the second largest employer from the private sector. San Diego is considered the most educated city in the United States on account of the people that hold bachelor's degrees (40% of the population). The city has 34 libraries and 9 more in construction. It also has 113 elementary schools, 23 middle schools and 27 high schools. There are many public or private collages and universities: San Diego State University, University of California, National University and many others. The city is also home to one of the top 25 law schools: California Western School of Law. The city has many museums, art galleries, operas and other cultural tourist attractions. Automobiles are the primary means of transportation (over 80%) but the city has a great system of public transportation. Coaster trains connect San Diego with Los Angeles and other cities. You can travel through the city by bus, trolley or Amtrak.
The roadways system has an extensive network for bikers and this is a fast and environmentally friendly method of getting around the city. The primary airport is the San Diego International Airport. More than 17 million passengers go through it every year. The city has means of water transportation though its harbor. Almost any destination can be reached by see from The Port of San Diego. The National Steel and Shipbuilding Company have the largest shipyard in the United States and it constructs ships and other vessels for the U.S. Navy since 1960. The largest naval fleet in the world can be found in this city and many ships and submarines are home ported here. San Diego is one of the biggest cities in California and it has the most educated city in the U.S. Its population continues to grow and it is considered an economical center of the U.S., because it is the 8th largest city and it has a great industry on many different domains.
