If you want to take a trip to San Diego Bay but you don't really know anything about that area, then the article that follows might be helpful for you. Bordered by San Diego, Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach and National City, San Diego Bay is an impressive natural harbor 3 miles wide and 12 miles long. A strip of land called the Silver Strand protects it against the Pacific Ocean. This strip is larger at its northern end, becoming what it is known to be the North Island. This is the home of the Naval Air Station North Island, the place where aircrafts like USS Ronald Regan are housed. Apart from this Air Station, the US Navy also has other facilities around the same bay- Naval Station San Diego and Point Loma Naval Base (located at Ballast point). The latter of those two is a nuclear submarine base. Another attraction of this part of San Diego Bay is the famous Hotel del Coronado, the hotel built exactly at the water's edge. The USS Midway- the largest aircraft museum ever and the Star of India (the oldest active ship) are also housed by San Diego Bay, making it an interesting study point. While at the northern part of the bay you'll find many official facilities, the southern end is mainly known as the resource for salt extracted from the sea water through evaporation ponds. The public land from the close neighborhood of the bay the airport, but also the harbor itself is administered by the authorities representing the Port of San Diego; this is a special entity created by the state authorities, and has an independent tax system and even its own police force, thus influencing the whole economic structure of the land surrounding San Diego Bay.
